What is ITEP Teacher Course?

The ITEP course is a new teacher education program introduced by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) in Rajasthan. This course allows students who have completed their 12th grade to pursue a career in teaching. Under the new education policy (NEP 2020), the need for a B.Ed degree to become a teacher will no longer be required. The NCTE has decided to replace the B.Ed course with the ITEP course.

The ITEP course will begin in the academic session of 2025-2026. The primary aim of this course is to prepare teachers for basic, primary, middle, and secondary school levels, based on the school structure. This will ensure that only qualified candidates will enter the teaching profession.

ITEP Full Form

  • English Full Form: Integrated Teacher Education Program
  • Hindi Full Form: इंटीग्रेटेड शिक्षक शिक्षा कार्यक्रम

ITEP Teacher Course Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for admission to the 4-year ITEP Teacher Course, candidates must have passed the 12th grade from a recognized institution. A minimum of 50% marks in 12th grade is required, although reserved category candidates (SC/ST) may receive relaxation in the required percentage.

Duration of ITEP Course

The ITEP course will have a duration of 4 years. Unlike before, when candidates had to complete their graduation before pursuing a B.Ed course, now they can directly apply for the ITEP course after completing their 12th grade. This means that aspiring teachers will be able to complete their teacher training in just 4 years instead of 5 or more years.

Benefits of the ITEP Teacher Course

  • Any student who has completed their 12th grade can apply for the ITEP course.
  • The course combines both undergraduate education and teacher training.
  • It provides direct teacher training after the 12th grade, without the need for a separate B.Ed degree.
  • The ITEP course will be available from the academic session of 2025-2026.
  • The 4-year B.Sc. B.Ed and B.A. B.Ed courses will be discontinued after the 2024-2025 session.
  • ITEP will provide training for becoming a teacher in both the government and private sectors.
  • The course will have equal recognition to that of the B.Ed course under the new education policy.
  • It will focus on preparing teachers for four educational levels: foundational, preparatory, middle, and secondary.

Drawbacks of the ITEP Teacher Course

  • Like the 4-year B.Ed courses, the ITEP course will also be of 4 years.
  • The ITEP program will likely be more expensive compared to the traditional B.Ed course due to higher fees.
  • As with any change, there may be challenges as students adjust to the new system.

Will the 2-Year B.Ed Course Also Be Discontinued?

As of now, the 2-year B.Ed course is not being discontinued. The new ITEP program will only affect the 4-year B.Ed courses. However, after 2030, the 4-year integrated B.Ed courses will be permanently phased out, and only those who complete the ITEP program will be eligible to apply for teacher recruitment. The 2-year B.Ed course will continue to be valid for higher-level teacher recruitment, but it will no longer be an option for primary teachers.

What About Those Who Have Already Completed 4-Year B.Ed Courses?

For candidates who have already completed their 4-year B.Ed or are pursuing it in the 2024-2025 session, their degree will remain valid until 2030. After that, they will need to pursue the ITEP course if they want to apply for teaching positions. The ITEP course will align with international teaching standards, similar to the education systems in Europe and America.

ITEP Teacher Course Admission Process (2025-2026)

The admission process for the ITEP course will begin in the 2025-2026 academic session. Candidates will need to fill out the online application form on the official NCTE website (ncte.gov.in). After submitting the application, candidates must clear the ITEP entrance exam. Based on the exam scores, the merit list will be published, and counseling will be conducted for college allocation.
